Located between two very popular islands of Pulau Perhentian and Pulau Redang, Pulau Lang Tengah is said to be one of Malaysia’s well-kept secrets. Pulau Lang Tengah is located slightly off the coast of the Terengganu state and it is one of the places of interest to visit in the state of Terengganu. Pulau Lang Tengah literally means Island of The Eagle In The Middle in the Malay language. The island was named that because of its location between Pulau Perhentian and Pulau Redang.

While Pulau Lang Tengah is not as popular as Pulau Penhentian and Pulau Redang, tourists mainly visit Pulau Lang Tengah for other reasons. The crystal clear seawater, breathtaking underworld view, sandy beaches and lush forests make Pulau Lang Tengah a popular place to visit for snorkelling and scuba diving activities. You will love the experience of being able to identify and spot different types of fishes including barracudas, nurse sharks, spotted stingrays, guitarfish, sponges, turtles and corals in their natural habitat if you enjoy being underwater.


Getting To Pulau Lang Tengah

Pulau Lang Tengah is located approximately 40 kilometres northeast of Kuala Terengganu and it is about 22.5 kilometres from Tanjung Merang, a small fishing village. Pulau Lang Tengah can be accessed using a boat from Tanjung Merang and speedboat departures from Tanjung Merang are usually pre-arranged with the resort that you are staying in and the total journey will take around 40 minutes. Most boat operators here have a fixed schedule and they will only depart twice a day which is once in the morning and once in the afternoon during peak seasons and only once a day during non-peak seasons. Each return trip will cost around RM95. It is also possible for you to charter a boat to Pulau Lang Tengah from Pulau Perhentian or Pulau Redang for about RM380 per trip. For those of you who are planning to fly in, you will have to fly to Kuala Terengganu first. AirAsia, Malaysian Airlines and Berjaya Air offers daily flights to Kuala Terengganu and the whole journey will take about 50 to 70 minutes depending on which state you are departing from.


Things to Do At Pulau Lang Tengah

In terms of scuba diving and snorkelling, there is a total of 12 different dive spots around Pulau Lang Tengah with a depth of 7 to 26 metres. These dive spots are easily accessed as they are located within 5 to 15 minutes by boat from the resort that you are staying in. One thing that attracts scuba divers to Pulau Lang Tengah is the possibility of being able to sight whale sharks and manta rays during a certain time of the year while turtles and barracudas can be generally seen throughout the year. Pulau Lang Tengah has excellent coral reefs and green turtles nesting can be seen from April to October. On certain occasions, you can even spot hawksbill turtles and if you are fortunate enough, you may even spot a leopard shark which is considered rare as well. The dive centre on the island also offers diving lessons.  Besides scuba diving and snorkelling, you can also enjoy an early morning trek to Batu Kuching (Cat’s Rock). You can enjoy watching the sunrise at 6.30AM here. The total trekking time will take about 30 minutes. If you are not an early morning person, you can also experience this trek at any other time of the day to enjoy beautiful views overlooking Pulau Lang Tengah and the surrounding sea. You can also take a stroll along the sandy and whitewashed beaches, bath in the sun to get a golden tan, explore the wonders of nature and do some kayaking.


Best Time to Visit Pulau Lang Tengah

Ideally, the best time to visit Pulau Lang Tengah is between the months of March to October.  The best months would be from April to September. There is a fierce monsoon season at the end of October until the end of February so it is advisable to avoid visiting Pulau Lang Tengah during this time of the year. It is also advisable to avoid visiting here during public and school holidays.
