Crystal Mosque or locally known as Masjid Kristal is a modern and unique looking mosque located in the state of Terengganu, Malaysia. It is specifically located on the island of Wan Man, a manmade island. The mosque is also located within the grounds of another famous attraction called the Islamic Civilization Park that costs a total of RM250 million to build. If you happen to visit Kuala Terengganu, this is one of the places that you must visit.
The construction of Crystal Mosque began in 2006 and it was finally completed in 2008. In February 2008, Crystal Mosque was opened to the public and was given a grand official opening by the 13th Yang-di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin of Terengganu.
Today, Crystal Mosque is regarded as one of the most beautiful mosques in the world along the likes of other famous mosques. As it was only recently completed in 2008, Crystal Mosque is relatively a young mosque when compared to the other older and historic mosques.
It is an astounding piece of unique architecture that is made of steel, glass and crystal hence its name. The main highlight of the mosque is its crystal-like appearance which is often illuminated from the inside. It also adopts a contemporary style and it is further influenced by Gothic and Moorish elements. It’s modern and sleek look is reflected off the river surrounding the Crystal Mosque creating beautiful impressions during different times of the day. In keeping up with the modern and sleek appearance, the interior of the mosque was also given the same treatment. A large crystal chandelier that forms a centrepiece can be seen in the main prayer hall along with beautifully etched calligraphy. The soft carpet also feels comfortable and warm under the feet of visitors and worshippers. Crystal Mosque is also Malaysia’s first intelligence mosque with a complete built-in IT infrastructure and Wi-Fi internet connection. This allows visitors to surf the internet and read electronic Quaran.
During the night, Crystal Mosque comes alive with its mesmerizing and brilliant display of lights when its domes and minarets change their colours to yellow, green, pink and blue as a result from lights from the inside.
